Whether ink drawings, oils or acrylics on canvas, fashion portraits or iPad painting – Katja Foos captures characters and situations with her expert eye and sure strokes. First of all comes the drawing – a moment, gesture or expression captured and realised in a matter of seconds. The reduced lines of the pencil, tablet pencil or thick ink brush capture the essence. In her coloured acrylic or oil paintings, her choice of colours and expansive application of colour emphasise the character and radiance of the subject.
iPAD PAINTING

Just as on canvas, Katja Foos also uses the iPhone or iPad to expedite the overpainting. This never completely covers, but grants a glimpse beneath the surface. She questions the obvious. Beneath the tablet’s glassy surface lies an alluring depth, which she knows how to fill. The drawings, which often come into being on train journeys, are transferred onto canvas, and work is continued using other media, with the results appearing to the beholder like a spacey clash.
PAINTINGFirst there was the fashion drawing. Then came people In black on white. Or white on black. Observations of everyday scenes, movements, emotions. And suddenly, pink! The colour pink hardly every occurs in nature. It is an artificial colour full of radiant brilliance, which Katja Foos has chosen as the universe for her hubots (human robots) and beast machines. People as machines, which she applies to wood or paper with a broad stroke and expansive application of colour, representing a superficial ideal of beauty in a dystopian future. Katja Foos presents the temptation of artificial intelligence in opulent images: pink with a pinch of painted black humour.

“Here I bring sustainable Christmas trees from the Black Forest out into the world! No trees are felled, and none are identical. Painted on canvas, rolled up, and with height-adjustable stands and LED lighting – it can be reused every year, and is easy to take with you to Kitzbühel or Aspen or wherever.”

Als Tusche-Zeichnung, in Öl oder Acryl auf Leinwand, als FashionPortrait oder iPad-Painting – mit geübtem Auge und sicherem Strich fängt Katja Foos Charaktere und Situationen ein. Zu Beginn steht die Zeichnung, das sekundenschnelle Erfassen und Umsetzen eines Moments, einer Mimik, eines Ausdrucks. Die reduzierte Linie mit Bleistift, Tablet Pencil oder dickem Tuschepinsel trifft das Wesentliche. Beim farbigen Acryl- oder Ölbild unterstreichen Farbauswahl und der flächige Auftrag der Farbe Charakter und Ausstrahlung des Portraitierten.

Wie auf der Leinwand forciert Katja Foos auch am iPhone oder iPad die Übermalung, die aber nie komplett verdeckt, sondern den Blick unter die Oberfläche gewährt. Sie hinterfragt das Offensichtliche. Unter der spiegelglatten Oberfläche des Tablets verbirgt sich eine verführerische Tiefe, die sie auszufüllen weiß. Die Übertragung der Zeichnungen, die oft während Zugfahrten entstehen, auf Leinwand und die Fortsetzung der Arbeit mit anderen Mitteln wirkt auf den Betrachter wie ein spacey Clash.

Am Anfang stand die Modezeichnung. Dann kam der Mensch. In Schwarz auf Weiß. Oder Weiß auf Schwarz. Beobachtungen von Alltagsszenen, Bewegungen, Emotionen. Und plötzlich Pink! Pink kommt als Farbe fast nirgends in der Natur vor. Es ist eine künstliche Farbe mit strahlender Leuchtkraft, die Katja Foos als Universum für ihre Hubots – Human Robots – und Beastmachines gewählt hat. Der Mensch als Maschine, den sie mit breitem Strich und flächigem Farbauftrag auf Holz oder Papier bringt, entspricht einem oberflächlichen Schönheitsideal in einer dystopischen Zukunft. Katja Foos führt uns die Versuchung der künstlichen Intelligenz in opulenten Bildern vor: Pink mit einer Prise getuschten schwarzen Humors.
